Static Friction
  • Static friction refers to friction in objects that aren't moving or are on the verge of moving.

NB: In this course, we only learn about static friction as moving friction is like 4 unit maths stuff.

Concept of Friction and its use in Engineering

  • Friction is the "stopping force" in nature. Without it one cannot brake their cars or tighten a screw.
  • However, in most cases friction is also the enemy of efficiency as it opposes motion and causes wear on moving parts.
  • Thus in a system one needs to find a balance between the need for friction in traction and braking situations but also the need to limit it in systems that are moving.
