Timber
  • Timber is a natural composite with cellulose fibres (tracheids) held together by natural resin (lignen)
  • It has a good strength to weight ratio but due to being a natural material, suffers from factors such as rot, moisture, prey and unexpected properties
  • There are two types of timber, hardwoods and softwoods
    • Hardwoods usually come from flowering plants, and contain porous structures.
    • Softwoods usually come from pines and conifers, and contain a neater structure with just the matrix.
