Stress and Strain diagrams

• To find the properties of some materials, a tension test is performed.
• This is a test where a load is applied to a sample of the material and the extension is measured.
• From the information produced by the test, we are able to draw a stress and strain diagram.

• As shown, we can obtain many information from a stress and strain curve:
  • Young's modulus
  • Elastic limit
  • Yield Stress
  • Ultimate stress
  • Breaking stress
  • Resilience
  • Ductility
  • Toughness
  • Elongation
  • Brittleness
